Site Registrations and Minor Maintenance
UPDATE: The Wiki registration is now fixed! Go register today!
After much searching, and a few loose ends, I believe to have discovered what caused our slowdown and downtime the other day, when Tiamat posted the respec mod and several hundred people went to download it all at the same time. To put it simply, there was a conflict with caching caused by the module that was linking forum registration to the mod database. In other words, there was no caching going on, which is why when we suddenly got a few hundred visitors to that part of the site, it crashed.
Assuming nothing else was happening simultaneously to cause the problem (another glitch somewhere) I believe the problem to now be solved, but at a small cost: Anyone who hasn’t logged in to our Torchlight Mods Database already will have to do separate registrations for the forums and mods database. I know it can be an annoyance to have to register multiple time at the same site, but I personally don’t have the code skills to make a work-around myself, and I think you would all prefer the site to be up and working at the cost of a minor inconvenience.
Another bug that is going to be fixed within the next day is the problem of user logins to the wikis. Unfortunately, like the above problem, the source was the link to the forums, so we’ll be turning on separate registration for the wiki family within the next day. I know those of you waiting to help out on the updates will be glad to get your hands on things.
We are also going to be doing some minor maintenance to the site soon, so if you notice anything looking strange on any part of the site for a few minutes, it’s just me rattling at things behind the scenes. If the probably doesn’t go away, be sure to let me know. Everything is being done to optimize the site and keep the monthly maintenance costs down. Hopefully within the next week or so I should also have a new, quicker loading media gallery up for pictures, videos, and more.
One last thing, because I have a suspicion this will be important very soon: When TorchED, the Torchlight modding/level Editor, is released, I will upload a mirror of it to our site just as soon as I am awake and able to do so. I did my best to make sure the caching on the mod database was fixed before I sleep tonight (because it is nearly 1 AM where I am), just in case the tools happen to come out while I am sleeping and you want to upload some mods.
See you all in the daylight hours!
