    On August 11 I was lucky enough to be in Seattle. Why does that make me lucky? Because I had an open invitation to come visit Runic Games whenever I was in town, and it just happened to be their seven year anniversary as a company, and it was a scant two weeks before PAX Prime - important because they had a brand new game announcement to be made and I got to check it out early! Want the details? Read on!


    I arrived downstairs at around 11:30 in the morning and was greeted down at the security checkpoint by Brian, who led me up to the office. It was a wide open office with walls covered in art and stickie notes, with probably more computers than I’ve ever seen in one place and people with headphones behind most of them. It was kind of funny because they assumed I already knew about the new game, but between fatherhood, work, and prep for an international flight I’d been out of the loop for weeks now. This is important to point out,because with absolutely no previous knowledge they sat me down, had me sign an NDA, and dropped me straight in to a game of HOB.

    Woohoo! The day of the big reveal has come! Runic Games has just announced Hob, with a trailer video, a Polygon article, a new Facebook Page and forum, AAAANNNDDDD a nice fat long gameplay preview from myself! I'll post the other stuff then make a new news post on here for my own preview, so stay tuned!

    Hob is an adventure game where you play a mysterious character who wakes up on what seems to be an unknown planet. You have to figure out why you're there and what you're doing. "There's a lot more to the narrative than what we're used to," Schaefer says. There is combat, which in motion looks like the sort of battles you see in modern Zelda games, but you have to explore the world and solve problems. You have to learn about what's going on.

    "We're telling the story with no words," Schaefer says. "There is no dialogue in the game. There are no NPCs that say anything. There's barely interface on-screen at all. There's a huge process of discovery and learning that is non-verbal." Runic is used to creating setpieces where battles lead to more loot, but Hob is about exploration, not collection and upgrades. This is a game where the team had to slow down and figure out what each piece of the world means. "It's a radical, radical departure than anything we've ever done," Schaefer says.


    "It's an open world, but it changes drastically all the time," Lefler says. You'll have to unlock new powers and find items that allow you to explore and unlock more of the environment, and sometimes that means the landscape itself can shift under you. It sounds like Metroid placed inside a Rubik's cube.

    Howdy y'all! Today I've compiled all the Torchlight Mobile previews from this year's E3 in to one bonanza of a news post! To make the deal even sweeter, I've also gathered all of the screenshots from various sources to one gallery for you to check out. Read on!

    First up is a preview from GameGrin, which in addition to a nice in-depth review of the gameplay so far, contained an accidental tidbit, in the form of screenshots like this:If you look VERY carefully you can see that the shots from this site (and no other site) were taken from within the Unity Editor, a very versatile engine which I happen to recognize from a personal project of my own. The cool point about the engine is that it can build to just about any platform, from desktop to console and every mobile device in-between. This also means the game was rebuilt from the ground up, as the previous Torchlight games were build using the graphics engine Ogre3D. Here's a quote from the article to finish off our GameGrin coverage:
    Admittedly, I did not get a lot of time to play quests, so I cannot talk at length about them. And, due to my character’s level, I only had access to one special ability. That said, the single player dungeon crawler mode was a lot of fun. It’s definitely Torchlight--enemies, interactions, and combat are surprisingly similar to the original game. The same look, almost the same feel. I did notice quests are notably shorter, lasting only a few minutes. This isn’t a bad thing, though. In fact, I rather enjoyed the quick rebound. Mobile players don’t have time for hour-long games. They need something they can play on the go--something with high replayability that can be dropped after a couple of minutes. This was Torchlight Mobile’s biggest strength, I think.

    You can also check out the developer's forums for new info and the official site for concept art. Just from glancing at everything, my guess is that Torchlight Mobile might be a multiplayer prequel featuring Alric. We'll see!

    The game will be shown at E3. I've also noticed that Runic has replaced their R logo with a new one, in case that means anything.

    Hello all, just a little system notice for you: If you see this then you have survived the server switch, which may have taken a couple days to hit you depending on technical things like local DNS servers refreshing. There have also been some updates, and there are some more updates planned for the near future.
