Apologies if the headline confuses anyone! Today's news tidbit follows former Runic Games Founders Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer at their new two-man-only company Double Damage Games, as they reveal the first trailer for their new game Rebel Galaxy! There's a hefty article on Polygon, which is definitely worth checking out, as well as the Rebel Galaxy website. Here's the trailer for the game, as well as a quote from the website and a little follow up analysis:
Double Damage Games was founded in 2014 by Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer.

Travis and Erich previously co-founded Runic Games, where we made Torchlight and Torchlight 2.

Before that, Travis created Fate in 2005 and was project and engineering lead on Mythos, before it was torn out of our hands in the Flagship Studios debacle of 2008. Erich was co-creator and lead designer of Diablo and Diablo II, then went on to lead Hellgate: London (blah blah Flagship debacle).

So we’ve been making big action-RPGs with big teams for a long, long time now.

Double Damage and Rebel Galaxy is a huge, well-needed, change of pace. It’s just us two. Not to detract from the excellent art and music contractors we are working with, but DDG is just us. We wanted to make smaller, quicker games (though I doubt people will find Rebel Galaxy to be small), in a way not accountable to investors or suits, and not responsible for managing big teams. We’ve had great, exciting careers so far, but Double Damage is the funnest time we’ve developing a game in… forever? We hope you’ll enjoy playing it!
Now for a little analysis: Some people may read into the quotes about why Travis and Erich left the company (specifically the part where they say they are in a rut and have been making the same type of game for years) to mean that they left Runic because Runic is still working on Torchlight or another ARPG. I'm going to take it from another angle: These guys are game developers, who've managed to be so successful that they ended up running a company AND doing development, when they'd rather just develop games. Compared to the pace of having to run ideas by a team of thirty or so people and check in with investors, with just two people and all the art and music contracted out they can develop games much quicker, which means more chances to make a variety of games and do more experimental things than they would otherwise have.

BUT that's all my opinion, and in no way confirms or denies what Runic is working on next - because I don't know! Either way, I'm excited to have more games to play by the people I like making them. Head on over to Rebel Galaxy and support our favorite Runic alums!

We've reached our initial goal! The site is saved, in less than two weeks no less! Super thanks to the ten people who have contributed so far, you've done a huge favor to me and to our community!

There are still 48 days on the campaign however, and two more goals we could reach. I've updated the third goal to have an appropriate reward, but here's a reminder of what happens if we reach the remaining two goals:

924 Dollars: All servers fees for the year are covered, meaning we will have an entire year where the site is ad-free for everyone, guests and registered users alike!

1200 Dollars: All servers fees and software fees covered (including upgrades/updates/software license renewals and the cost of my Dropbox account covered (which is used to backup the site and all of the other files pertinent to website development). This results in a year free of ads for everyone, plus anyone who donates at least 5 dollars during the campaign will be Ad Free for Life!

Additionally, the Dark Alchemist statues (which go to the two highest contributors) are currently at the following:
First Place: 176 dollars or more.
Second Place: 141 dollars or more.

Thank you everyone, and I'm glad to say we'll be sticking around!

Note: Skip to the bottom of the post for the Fundraiser Statue update.

Hey all! I'm a bit slow on this update, but better late than never! The latest interview on the Torchlight 2 site with a Runic developer has gone online, this time with Matt Lefferts, the team's Leader Animator. Take a gander!

So I started working at Flagship and I pushed myself really hard and was always trying to come up with new game ideas. In talking to Marsh and Travis about me back then, they I think viewed me as the guy who pitched ideas that were outlandish and were never going to happen. But I know that I had a lot of enthusiasm for it. I was trying to leave my mark on the project – because I was coming into something that I didn’t start. And there was a lot of animation work that I was trying to improve or give a unique quality to some of the different races. This was when we were working on the beta development of Mythos.

I was about four months into the project and it shut down – and I was out of a job! I had just moved to the city. I didn’t even really know anyone yet. I had enough money to either buy a plane ticket home or pay rent one more time and stick around. In the wake of all that, when we were shut down, we knew immediately that we were going to form Runic. We didn’t know it would be called that. That took time. I think I still have the incredible email chain that went on for days and days between fifteen people about what we should call the company.

Sounds like an interesting e-mail chain! Maybe we can see it someday!

    ...and here's the fundraiser update!

We're over 50% of the way to our initial goal! Thanks everyone who has contributed!
Also, thanks to another amazing contributor the Statues now stand at the following dollar amounts:
    First Place Statue: 140 dollars
    Second Place Statue: 70 dollars
Beat either price and be in the running for one of the extremely rare statues!

Hello everyone! There's no way to cherry coat what I'm about to say, so I'm going to jump right into it:

RGF is running out of money. For the vast majority of its lifetime the site has been able to support itself. There was a time in the beginning when I had to cover base costs, but that time was short and it didn't cost very much. These days, with hundreds of mods, a huge database of users and forum posts, and not very many people visiting, the site has been in the negative for a long while. There have been some people who many small contributions (using the Contribution system, which is currently disabled to focus on the fundraiser) who made it possible to keep the site online for this long, but now we're at the end of the road.

...unless you all can stop that from happening. I've written a much longer explanation on the IndieGoGo campaign page, but here's the short and simple version:

    • If we can raise enough money to keep the site going for a year, I'll keep the site online.
    • If we don't raise enough money but we still make SOME money I'll keep the site going until the money runs out, and then shut the site down when that runs out, UNLESS...
    • ... if the amount of money we raise is enough to keep the site going until things pick up again, then we'll keep going as things have been up until now.
    • Last, if we go over the goal and reach the stretch goals then the site will stay online AND there will be no advertisements for anyone until either another round of fundraising occurs or we have to re-implement ads to keep things going again.

The campaign will go for 60 days, which is how long until the first round of in-affordable server bills will appear. For complete details, check out the IndieGogo Campaign either by clicking here, the special Logo at the top of the site, or the sidebar block! ...

An interesting little tidbit of information has trickled into the wild today, when the database information for Torchlight II on Steam was altered. Now, in addition to the entry for the PC Version there are entries for Mac OS (which is confirmed to still be in development) and Linux. Here is a copy of the entries, which originally can be found by clicking here.

    • 200714/config/language: english
    • 200714/config/oslist: macos
    • 200714/name: Torchlight II Mac
    • 200715/config/language: english
    • 200715/config/oslist: linux
    • 200715/name: Torchlight II Linux

Meanwhile, Torchlight 1 had a similar change. While Torchlight 1 was released on Linux already, it was only available via a Humble Indie Bundle, and not through Steam. Here is a copy of the Torchlight 1 changes:

    • 41504/config/oslist: linux
    • 41504/name: Torchlight Linux

    • launch/2/config/osarch: 32
    • launch/2/config/oslist: linux
    • launch/2/executable: Torchlight.bin.x86
    • launch/3/config/osarch: 64
    • launch/3/config/oslist: linux
    • launch/3/executable: Torchlight.bin.x86_64

Perhaps this is a sign that there will be Linux releases simultaneously with the Mac release of Torchlight 2, and the big day is finally almost here? I'll be sure to post when either there is confirmation or official denial. ...

Hello all! Great news to share with you today! To get straight into it, thanks to several considerate contributions to the site we'll now be Advertisement-Free for all registered members until the end of July! That means no download delay screens for the Torchlight 2 mods and no more banners anywhere. Thank you all! It really feels like every time I start to worry about the site's finances someone selflessly steps up to help out! ...
