XBLA Torchlight Release, PC-Mac Price Drop, No Japanese Torchlight

Happy Belated Release Day! The last 24 hours brought XBLA Torchlight to the public, with almost unanimously good reviews. This is going to be an all-in-one post, with some summarizing due to the massive number of reviews released. This post will cover:
    • Basic information for all our new XBLA Torchlight Fans
    • A list of the latest reviews and articles for XBLA Torchlight
    • Information about the permanent PC and Mac Torchlight price drop.
    • All the vital info about the non-existent Japanese version of Torchlight

First up, welcome to all of our new visitors! If you are here that means you found the biggest and best of the Runic Games Fansites (actually, the only one still alive). We have forums, access to the official IRC Chat Room, a Wiki, many FAQs, screenshots and videos, and of course the news - ALL accessible from the menu at the top of this page. There is also a Mods section, but that only applies to people using the PC or Mac version of Torchlight.

If you were not aware, the official forums for Runic Games can be located here, and the official Twitter feed can be found by clicking here. If you just want the news, you can follow one of the RSS feeds on this site, or subscribe to our own Twitter Feed.

If you have any questions, feel free to leave questions here, either in this thread or elsewhere on these forums.

Moving on, there are MANY reviews and articles about the release of XBLA Torchlight. So many that it would take a tremendous amount of time to list them here. Fortunately, there are is a place that already has many of the articles listed. In case you didn't know, the official Torchlight website also posts news and blogs. In this case, our favorite PR Manager of Runic Games took the time and effort to post links to 52 separate news articles. You can find the full list by following this link here.

Next on our list is the long-awaited price drop! We suspected there might be a change, due to the console version of Torchlight only costing 15 dollars and the regular price for all PC and Mac versions being 20 dollars. Well today alongside the XBLA Torchlight the price on ALL Digital Distributors dropped permanently to 15 dollar US. Thinking ahead, this could also point towards the possibility of Torchlight II costing 20 dollars, to match the price of the original game. Will it happen? We'll let you know when the time comes.

Finally, this nearly perfect launch day had one slight hitch. In an unexpected move that angered some of our Japanese gamers, Microsoft Japan announced that Japan's XBLA Torchlight was canceled due to unexpected bugs dealing with the text display. The way most sites phrased it made it appear that the game was snatched out of the hands of gamers at the last possible moment, for a pretty lame reason. However, once Runic got wind of this company President Travis Baldree sent the following message out to the various gaming news sites:

"We're not privy to the decision making process in providing the game in Japan - but it was not due to bugs in the translation because the game has never been translated to Japanese. Since there was no existing Japanese version of the game, the complexity of a new translation combined with the randomly generated naming scheme for Torchlight made it beyond the scope of the project."
While you can see how things turned out by clicking this link to a Joystiq article, I'll just reinforce it by telling you that I personally followed up on it this morning by contacting Runic and confirming that there never has been a Japanese version of Torchlight, there never was a plan to translate it for the XBox Live Arcade, and there was no game to cancel. I have also since confirmed that the English version is also not being sold on Japan's XBLA, so if you have a Japanese XBox 360 then you are out of luck. Sorry!

That's all the news for today! Enjoy your couch-based dungeon crawling everyone!

So many greats reviews! It's almost tempting to get it again but for my 360, lol.

I've always been a console gamer really, so its hard for me to comment without bias, but since playing the 360 version for the past couple of days I can strongly recommend it!

The controls really do feel more , instead of having to click all the time you really feel like you are your character and doing things like dodging projectiles feels much more plausible. This 1:1 movement really adds an extra feeling of excitement to the game and other things like drinking potions (one button to press, no different sizes of potion to organise!) and aiming projectile weapons / skills feel so much easier with a controller.

Plus it's great to hear the music coming out of my television speakers (in stark contrast to the tinny laptop speakers I'm used to hearing it on) and seeing my characters come to life on the "big screen"... so to speak.

So yeah, I'm totally biased, but Torchlight for 360 is awesome and it's a great excuse to experience the game all over again with that "shiny & new" feeling.
