Official Updates, Tweets, and a New Gameplay Video!

It's been a while since we've had some news, right? You can blame me for that, as I've been lacking on the motivation department lately (see my Unemployment Slothery blog for details). I'll try to make it up for you today though, with a horde of updates to quench your Torchlight thirst.

First, because it's what you all really want to see, we have a new gameplay video online! Wonder and Max are in Germany for a couple days showing off the PAX build of Torchlight 2, and as a reward pcgames.de has uploaded the first gameplay video recorded directly by the computer (as opposed to with a camera recording a screen) since the initial release announcement. It shows various parts of Act 2, some areas I don't believe we've seen before, and some kind of boss creature(s) that look awesome.

Unfortunately, I can't embed the video from their site, so you will have to check it out by clicking here!

Also, if you want to follow Wonder's Wacky Adventures abroad, and find out how the trip to Germany and Russia are going, check out this thread she started on the official forums. Here's a quote:
9:30am. We get to Computec in Nuremburg, where Felix Schutz and Petra Frohlich meet us. Max and I install the PAX build on 6 computers in their conference room. Soon everyone arrives – gaming journalists and 2 fans who won a contest for the chance to play. Some of the guys did get the chance to play at Gamescom, but haven’t seen any of Act 2 yet, and are excited to play the Ember Mage. The click fest begins! We break for lunch but otherwise, they pay the heck out of the PAX build, wrapping up at 6pm. One of the guys tells me there's a MacDonald's burger here called the Nuremburger. Shenanigans!
Next up, let's talk release dates. Or specifically, the lack of release dates. Some online stores, such are certain international branches of Amazon, are giving release dates for Torchlight 2, such as September or October, but these are just dummy dates or guesses. Don't believe me? Let's see what the devs have to say!

It will be out before Christmas unless someone on the team dies.

But enough of destroying your hopes and dreams, let's give a few of you something to look forward to! It appears that European players will have the opportunity to purchased a boxed version of Torchlight 2. If you remember a recent interview with Max Schaefer, he said they weren't sure if they were actually making any money on the boxed versions, but now we at least have confirmation for Europe. If you are in the US, however, you might still be stuck with just a digitial download version:

In the US, it's kind of a down the road sort of thing. We've signed no agreements to release a box in the US. I just don't want to leave you guys with the impression that we're launching with boxes on day one. There will be boxed releases internationally, such as in Germany, at some point after our initial release. The cover art is really an iconic piece to represent the game, even if it's just a digital release to start.

That of course leads us back to the original source of that information, an official update on the torchlight2game.com site, titled Update From the Trenches.
Here's a quote (it's a short update) and an image:
Since showing Torchlight II at PAX Prime, we've been hard at work! We want to keep you in the loop with what's brewing, but we're working on the final Act and want to keep it mostly under wraps. That way there are some surprises on launch day!

But if we can't tell you exactly what we're working on, we can at least show you that we're working. Brian Ward took some great photos of devs at their desks. We're here! And we're bringing you the game as fast as possible.

We can tell you that we have a website redesign in the works, as well as a very special piece of cover art that will serve as the face of Torchlight II and eventually be on boxes. Look for those coming soon as we are able to unveil them.

In the meantime, thank you for bearing with us. We're so grateful to our fans and all the gamers who love Torchlight I, and we are excited to bring you the sequel.

That's it for today's news! I'll try to keep things updated in a more timely manner... and maybe even get that pesky FAQ updated too!

Re: Official Updates, Tweets, and a New Gameplay Video!

Thanks for the video link! I'll check it out and see if there's anything new in it to post about in the morning. As for the release date I am getting the feeling that Max is more optimistic than most of the devs, and December is a more likely guess. Also, Runic isn't the team that made Hellgate London, that was the other Flagship Studios team down in California. Runic was founded just from the people who made Mythos.
