Perfect World Co. Ltd. (NASDAQ: PWRD) is an online game developer and operator based in China. In 2009 the company entered into an exclusive agreement with
Runic Games to publish
Torchlight worldwide.
The company developed
Perfect World -- the MMORPG that shares the name of the company -- which gained popularity in China. In 2008 Perfect World established its U.S. subsidiary Perfect World Entertainment Inc. for the purpose of localizing and operating its games in the United States. In the West, it has released several games, such as ''Perfect World'' and ''Pocketpet Journey West (Kodai Shiyou)'' under the title ''Ether Saga Online''.
In May of 2010, Perfect World acquired a majority in Runic Games for 8.4 million dollars, thereby officially removing the "Indie" status that Runic Games was previously known for. This was apparently part of the long-term plan from the start.
Like many Asian MMOs, Perfect World's games are
free-to-play with microtransactions (RMT).
