Thumbs down Help,I can't get mods to work!

I cannot get some mods work, for example,Skins and Classes don't work for me,like i put a skin/class mod to the folder [c\ocuments and Settings\[My user name]\Application Data\Runic Games\Torchlight\Mods] and delete all the .adm files [coz nothing works if u don't do that] and run TL,It might start loading, and then before the TL first screen where's the Alchemist,Destroyer and Vanquisher,it says something like ''Runtime Error'' and i press ok,it exits. But sometimes it might get to the main screen, where u can start a new char or load a new char etc,but after that it does the same error. The weird thing is,that SOME mods DO work, like the mod that gives u 19 stashes, but Skins and Classes DON'T.So please, someone, help me with this problem,i REALLY want more Skins and Classes to the game,Thanks.

Have you tried using TorchLeech to install the mods for you, and to check for conflicts between mods?

In fact i have.First i tried to do it manually [installing] but then i found Torchleech.I downloaded and installed many mods, and checked the conflicts, and i found some, and i deleted the mods that had conflicts, and then checked again. No conflicts, and then i ran the game...didn't work,so then i started to manually install them again, but as i said, only SOME mods work.

It sounds like you are having two different problems, which need to be handled separately.

1- Sometimes mods make the game crash.

    2- Some mods don't work.

Can you do some experimenting and give me examples of which mods cause which problem?

Kk,so,for example, class mods cause this problem: It opens up the game all nicely up to the screen where u start a new char or load one, etc. Then when u try to create a new char,it says gameplay error or something like that. Then for skins, sometimes it won't even start, like when i run it,it directly says that gameplay error, but sometimes it goes to the same point as the classes. That's it,those are the 2 points where ALL of the mods crash. Before it even starts, and at the main screen.I rly hope u can help me with this.

One thing at a time :P Try to space it out so I can help narrow this down between issues

    • Your class mods are making it to the character select screen just fine?
    • Then if you try to create a class, it crashes?
    • Are you trying to install more than one class mod at a time?

Skins shouldn't crash the game, as they are just replacing existing skins in the game. If they don't load then you should only see the vanilla game skins.
    • Are you trying these skins after testing the class mods?
    • Have you gotten any class mods to work?
    • What class was the class of the last character you had loaded?

Re: Help,I can't get mods to work!

It's hard to explain this easily, but I suspect you've got a bunch of problems happening at once, due to the way you are mixing and matching mods. It's probably gotten to the point where your existing characters will never load exactly right, because if you can get them to load they may run into different situations where the game will try to call on a mod that you aren't using at the moment, or can't use because it would break a different mod and cause the game to crash in a different situation.

This is the best advice I can give you, and I'm sorry if it isn't what you want to hear:
    1. Delete all the mods in your mods folder
    2. Delete all your character saves (You can back them up somewhere, but I can't promise they will load correctly - you might be able to salvage your shared stash items though)
    3. Start a Regular character, and name him something obvious, like "Mr. Vanilla" or "No Mods Character" or something.
    4. Start the game with him/her, then save and quit out of Torchlight.
    5. Choose all the mods you want to try with a new character - don't plan on removing or adding more to this new character, or you might break the character again. At max have only one character class or class pack installed for this character. Check for Conflicts with TorchLeech, make your new modded Character.
    6. Make a list of every mod you are using for your modded character. Save that list somewhere.
    7. If you decide later you want to try some different mods, load up the game (without changing any mods yet!) and load your No Mods character. Once he is loaded save and quit the game.

Now every time you want to change mods, you should follow steps 5 and 6, AFTER you have made sure the No Mods character is the last thing to have loaded. This is the safest way to try a lot of mods without breaking everything. You never want to load a character without the proper mods installed, or it could break the game, as it appears to be doing for you so far.

Hmm i see...that certainly doesn't sound good..i've spent very many hours on my char's,for example,i have a Destroyer that's about lvl 27,and i've played for 12h's on him...so,let me ask u this: Is it 100% SURE,that it will DEFINITELY work after i do those? Coz u know...i rly wouldn't like to lose all of my char's for nothing...

Re: Help,I can't get mods to work!

If you are very careful with the mods, keep track of everything and check for conflicts, then the only problems you should face would be those built into the game or into a mod itself. It's MUCH easier to troubleshoot if something goes wrong this way too.

Not trying to discourage you either. We're pushing to get some things done for Torchlight 2 so we can avoid this kind of trouble, so hopefully modding will work out better in the next game. For now, this is the safest way.
