Would you believe an entire month has already passed from the LAST state of the site? It's as if time passes at a uniform rate that is exactly the same as the previous month!

So let's get right into it. What happened during the past month of June, 2018?

    Not much?

Ok, if you followed the Twitter or Facebook pages, you might have noticed that I live about 2 km from the epicenter of that nice big M6.1 earthquake that hit Japan last month. That seriously derailed me personally. I now live in a building where there are large cracks and fist-sized chunks missing in parts of the walls of my apartment building, and the outer stairs are half crumbled away. I might need to move, honestly. Basically between the fear of a larger quake and primal levels of fear in the night (the first few nights had a LOT of aftershocks) for myself and my family I really didn't have the drive to do anything for a solid week there.

But let's put aside the fact that June was a slow month, ignore July altogether, and look to the future.

Next month RGF is TEN YEARS OLD!!!!

We actually outlasted the company I named the fansite after. Bittersweet as that is, I've got some cool things in the works for the anniversary, so be sure to come back next month!

Oh, and you MIGHT expect a little downtime at some point in July for some site upgrades. I will try to give you all notice.

Those of you who follow the Runic Games Facebook page or Twitter Account are probably already aware of this, but for a few months now there have been Throwback Thursday posts with old Torchlight 2 Concept art. This caused a lot of confusion for people who suddenly weren't sure if the studio really had been closed down (and before I go any further, yes, the Runic Games studio we've all known and loved did shut down and the staff has all moved on to their own pursuits at new companies).

That said, our old friend Max Schaefer made a post through the Runic Games Facebook Page, which reads as follows:
Hi everyone, Max Schaefer here. I'm the former co-founder and CEO of Runic Games, and I'm currently the CEO of Echtra Games, Inc. I just wanted to catch everyone up on why there are Torchlight posts popping up here and elsewhere, and a bit of overall context.

We all know the Runic Games office in Seattle was closed down following the completion of Hob. It is not relevant to revisit a very complex situation, but the important thing is it doesn't mean the end of the Runic's game franchises.

The big question here is why there are new posts being made about Torchlight. As was mentioned at the time of Runic's closing, Perfect World has future plans for both of Runic's franchises. Of course they can't say what they are, but I know it's exciting and cool, because, well, I know things. So the whole idea here is to start to re-engage the community in preparation for future announcements. This isn't just torturing you about a franchise you love, rather it's an expression of affection and dedication to the franchise.

I've been flying below the radar the last couple years with our work here at Echtra Games, Inc. I still can't talk about it, yet, but in my spare time I'm going to start to help with re-engaging with the Torchlight community. I can honestly say that in more than 25 years of game development (yikes), the Torchlight community was totally unique. There has never been a better, nicer, more helpful group of fans than you guys. I really mean that. I've worked on "bigger" games, but their communities were like most game communities, with too much toxicity and negativity. That was never true about the Torchlight community. You guys were FUN to make games for. It was rewarding and satisfying to see your reactions when we made an announcement or shipped a Torchlight game. So that's why I'm back here now, and will keep hanging out to answer your questions when I can, and just to help keep everyone up to date.

Thank you all for your continued enthusiasm, and stick around, because really cool things are on the horizon!

With that said, you can follow the link above and go leave your own comments for Max through the Runic Games Twitter or Facebook accounts!

Welcome all, to this month's S-O-S! (Yeah, I went with the acronym after all).
This month's SOS topics include: HTTPS, Mod Spotlight locations, TorchModders!

First off, as the previous post indicated, we are now totally and completely HTTPS secure! The only time you should get any kind of warning now is if there is something on a page that is loading from an outside source, such as linking an image from another site. If you find anything that is giving you errors/warnings, let me know! Since I'm not infallible, there's always the possibility that you will find something using an outdated http:// link, in which case: LET ME KNOW!

Meanwhile, did you know I recently started expanding the locations of our mod spotlights? Here are your options if you want to get a mod suggested to you several times a week:

Note that Pinterest Mod Spotlights only happen when a mod has images to go with it. If anyone would like to volunteer to play mods and take screenshots, that would be really cool! Actually, I am considering spending some time later on converting some of our ANCIENT image galleries to Pinterest boards... we'll see.

In other news, I would really like to spotlight an amazing group of modders that are core to our community: TorchModders! Literally some of the best talent that still hangs around here are on that site, as well as in their Discord server. They could use a little help paying for the server bills, so if you have buck, perhaps pass it along?

That's it for June! See you again soon! Next Moon! While watching a cartoon! (I got carried away by the end there)

    Hello all!

This is a heads up to let you know we're in the process of changing the site over to a nice https connection. That basically means your logins are more secure, as well as any information going between you and the site. On some pages there may be warnings from your browser or Google about the content on the site including unsecure elements. That's basically caused by older links in various places of the site that are basically regular http urls being used. That is what I'm going to be spending the next week hunting down and updating, at which point you should be getting a nice little mark in your browser that looks like a lock, meaning your data is safely locked down.

As for WHY we're doing this when we never needed in before, it's basically because Google is in the process of phasing out non https results from its search results, and because of the warnings in various browsers that may scare off less informed people.

I'll make an update later when we're "Done" so you can report anything you find after that point!

    Hello all!

Today I'd to do something a bit new and different, which will become a regular thing in coming months. I'm going to start doing a State of the Site update. In the past I only did these when there were server moves, or when I was begging for money to keep the site online. I don't have bad news this time (Despite the acronym of the title being S-O-S), and I will try not to drag on for tooooooooooooooo long.

First up, financially everything is great. Seriously joining up with Olympus Games and integrating with ModDrop was the best choice I ever made. I've spent the past 18 months doing more for the site than I probably have since Torchlight 2 came out in 2012.

    • Depending on where you are browsing or subscribed you should be seeing semi-regular Mod Spotlights in our Twitter and Facebook feeds, as well as in the ModDrop Twitter and Facebook feeds. I've also set up a sub-forum on this site for Spotlights as well!
    • I'm in the ModDrop Discord and the technically Official Runic Games Discord, helping people who wander in and talking to old community friends and modders.
    • I recently went in and updated some of our largest mods with the most recent copies from their external sources. The reasons these mods moved away was due to former limitations we had on upload sizes, but now you can get them in their most recent glory once again.
    • Otherwise I've been free to work on other ModDrop-related projects behind the scenes. Not having to maintain the entire server on my own is so liberating!

Here are some mod-related news points as well:
    • I'm looking for volunteers to help organize some very old Fate mods that were rescued back in the day. If you're interested, hit me up on any social media platform, or e-mail at webbstre@runicgamesfansite.com
    • Sadly, Hob modding never took off. As such, I believe I'll remove the menu item soon.
    • If you are a modder who has uploaded mods to RGF, there is a system in place to go into ModDrop after making an account for yourself and claiming your mods from the site (The option asks you to connect by entering your RGF login information). I recommend you do that, and e-mails will be going out in the near future to remind modders of this.

In other news, while it's still so hard for my brain to comprehend that Runic Games was shut down (after all, I'm still here with the same group of people), I'm happy to report that many former Runic Games employees have gone on to amazing new jobs at some insanely popular game companies around the world! We've got several of them followed from our twitter account, if you want to go say hi for yourself.

That's it for this month! See you again in June!
